Visiting Air Raid Shelters
I haven't been to Air Raid Shelters yet...
Step back in time to 1940s wartime Britain Come and experience life as it was during a 'black out' in wartime Britain and experience the sights and sounds of the home front. Opened in 1939, the shelters were the largest purpose-built civilian air raid shelters in the country designed to provide shelter for up to 6,500 people. This labyrinth of tunnels under part of the town centre provided shelter, and a way of life for families from in and around Stockport through the dark days of the Blitz. In 1996 Stockport Council re-opened the shelters as a visitor attraction, and the unique award-winning museum is one of Stockports best loved attractions.
